MISSION AND VISION

The Bhutan Nuns Foundation (BNF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Tshering Yangdoen Wangchuck, and under the direction of Dr. Tashi Zangmo, Executive Director of the Foundation.

Mission

The Bhutan Nuns Foundation is committed to ensuring that all Buddhist Nuns and other grassroots women have improved living conditions, quality education, and self-reliance, thus enabling women’s successful participation in the socio-economic development of Bhutan.

This commitment arises not only on grounds of the deplorable conditions of life in the nunneries but also in cognizance of the spiritual education and nourishment that a GNH society will search for as Bhutan experiences material growth. The future role of nunneries in reigning in and tempering the accelerating material changes with compassion and basic human values must be recognized. Otherwise, the Bhutanese people are as likely as any other people to be converted to consumerism and never-ending greed.

Vision

The vision of BNF is to enhance Bhutanese society by empowering and building the capacity of nuns, girls and women through education, relevant skills training, research and learning to better serve the larger society in a continually changing society.

The Foundation seeks to help make nunneries leading agents and self-reliant institutions for women. It is committed to women’s education and empowerment as a way of enhancing their capacity to support society in its search for Gross National Happiness.
